Purchasing a Firearm Online

The legal way to do it!

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) restricts the shipping of firearms to Federal Firearm License (FFL) holders. While BATFE regulations complicate the process of purchasing a firearm online, it does not restrict the legal transfer of firearms to a FFL holder. Below is the process required to meet all regulations when purchasing a firearm from an online source.

Determine if you meet the qualifications for owning a firearm and that the firearm that you want to purchase is legal in your jurisdiction.

  • Read the information documents ATF I 3310.2, ATF I 3310.3, and ATF 1 3310.4 to verify that you qualify to purchase a firearm.
  • Check your State and Local laws for rules and regulations of owning a firearm. Verify that the firearm you would like to purchase is legal in your State, County, or City. If you have any questions about firearm ownership, contact the BATFE division for your area.

Locate a FFL holder in your area that will accept the shipment and perform the transfer. Many FFL holders will provide this service for a fee between $25-$50. One place to locate local FFL holders that offer transfer services is Gun Broker.

When you purchase the firearm, the seller will need to contact the FFL holder and get a signed in ink copy of the FFL holder’s license before the firearm can be shipped. Once the receiving FFL holder’s license has been verified, the firearm can be shipped.

The receiving FFL holder will contact you once the firearm has been received. When you go to pick up your firearm, the FFL holder will have you fill out ATF Form 4473, perform an FBI background check, and any other documentation required by your State or Local jurisdictions.
